first off...angel hernandez is not a boxer....he`s a mexican pressure fighter who comes forward and brawls....never was a boxer....never will be...
and i wouldn`t call lerma a boxer....a tall awkward,very slow lefty... ..he was destroyed in his last fight vs verno phillips and looks to be finished....i had the over in that fight and was very lucky to cash....lerma,in his day,did o.k. vs the middle rung guys(papillion,ankamah,bunema).....there`s a whole sub-culture of "not quite good enough" jr middle`s and middle`s that had nice career`s fighting each other on espn....
hernandez was outboxed by candelo in the last fight...actually,he was brutalized...

JC Candelo vs. Angel Hernandez
When Juan Carlos (J.C. to you) Candelo fought Angel (El Torito) Hernandez (1-12-02) in 'Vegas, he went 'Cajones Up', and waged all out war. It wasn't his smartest move, and Hernandez won a 12-round decision and the then vacant NABF Jr. middleweight title. Tonight in the tent at Temecula, J.C. switched signals and used his head. After spotting Hernandez the first couple of rounds, I wondered if Candelo was equipped for a full 12 rounds. Hernandez got off quickly, landing clean shots to JC's body and head. JC's alarm detonated in the fourth however and from then on, Angel had 'hell to tell the captain' as an energized JC landed bomb after bomb on a fast-fading Angel. Candelo's stuff busted Angel up pretty good. In a bout that oculd've been stopped, Hernandez was taken to a local hospital with numerous cuts and both orbs swollen. The decision was secondary, as JC's record goes to 25-4-3(17) and Hernandez is now 24-3-(15).

Kassim Ouma vs Angel Hernandez- 12 Round 154lb Main Event- IBF eliminator
This was a real close tough fight. Angel Hernandez started at a very brisk pace and went to work backing Ouma into the ropes in round one. He worked non stop and left Ouma with little chance to counter. Hernandez kept the pace up in the second round and landed some stiff rights. He also did something I love by getting space on the inside. He was using his forearm to push himself out onto his back foot and gain space. That enabled him to spring off that back foot and land that heavy right hand on the ropes. Ouma again spent too much time with his back on the ropes. The middle rounds proved to be a whole new fight with a winded Hernandez falling to the ropes in the third and allowing Ouma to get in steady work. Ouma kept that strong work through rounds four and five where he started to outbox the fading Hernandez. At the end of round five Hernandez was able to trap Ouma in the corner and score a few heavy rights. Round six was more of the Ouma showcase as he displayed some slick defensive posturing on the ropes and solidified his mark as the better conditioned fighter. Hernandez played to the crowd a bit and threw some tough punches that hinted at a comeback. In round seven Hernandez made good on that as he got tough again as he got busy on the ropes and the corner. He was once again able to back up Ouma. Round eight was one of the better rounds of the fight with both fighters landing good shots and making a determined bid for the points. The last four rounds showed both fighters begin to slow down as Ouma only showed up for the ninth. Hernandez continued to show hustle as Ouma faded down the stretch and got lax. It almost looked like Hernandez felt he needed the rounds and Ouma felt that he had the fight in the bag. The score cards tended to agree with that assessment as the cards read 115-113 twice for Ouma and 115-113 for Hernandez. this reporter had it 115-113 for Hernandez. With the win, Ouma becomes number 1 contender in the IBF and moves to 17-1-2 and Hernandez falls to 25-4.....

the question is:has candelo progressed beyond this point?.....he has shown very well recently and appears to get better with age.....not sure how he matches up with ouma,though.....
a couple things....ouma`s chin has looked a little shaky......candelo can punch,but usually wins by wearing opponents down...lots of body shots....hooks and uppercuts...he throws wide looping punches....not a quick puncher...which is why he will struggle with guys that are busy.... guys that throw punches in bunches...like ouma......hernandez was a swarmer..threw many punches from all angles...he just outworked candelo.....that`s how he outpointed candelo...candelo loses split decisions because,while he lands the better shots,he doesn`t always land enough of them....
this is how i see it...
i think ouma will start pretty fast...i think he`ll probably dominate early...he`s faster and throws straighter punches....and his lefty stance will give candelo trouble....
candelo can be out quicked....and that`s where the problem will be...he throws wide looping shots.....and i can see ouma beating him to the punch time and again....winky wright pretty much stood his ground vs candelo and was still busy enough and slick enough to outpunch candelo and win fairly easily....but that`s winky wright...i don`t think ouma`s in wright`s class...
candelo adjusts well...usually in the rematch...that`s no good here....he will need to hurt ouma and do damage early and build on that....
i agree with valdosta....if his chin hold up,ouma may get the decision.....but it`s a bit dicey....there`s alot of bad blood here....candelo has as good a chance at hurting ouma,as anyone else on his resume.....
the line is set tight for a reason....unfortunately,none of my books have it up....
